GILDNIGHT · PRIVACY
Privacy Policy
Your sleep is personal. Here is what Gildnight uses, what stays on your devices and what you choose to share.
Updated 2 November 2026
The short version
No Gildnight account. No ads. No tracking or analytics in the app. Gildnight does not send your sleep data to its developer.
Your nights are processed and saved on your iPhone. Apple Watch can contribute wrist movement and, with your permission, readings from Apple Health. You control the optional connections and anything you share.
Gildnight has no cloud sync. Its saved nights and sound clips are excluded from automatic device backups. You can make a backup file yourself, export your nights or delete them at any time, for free.
Sound and saved clips
During a night or nap, Gildnight analyses sound on your iPhone to help estimate sleep and waking, and to notice snoring, sleep talk and notable sounds. It does not record the whole night.
If Record sound clips is on, short clips of notable sounds are kept on your iPhone. Clips can include anyone nearby, so let others in the room know before recording. In the morning, Gildnight keeps up to 12 clips and deletes the rest. Kept clips expire after the period you choose unless you save them. Saved clips stay until you delete them.
If Show what was said is on, speech in a kept clip is turned into text on your iPhone. The text is deleted with the clip. Clips and their text are left out of backups. A clip leaves your iPhone only when you share it.
With Record sound clips off, sounds can still be analysed and shown in your night, but no audio is kept.
Camera and motion
Optional bedroom-light measurement briefly uses the front camera while the night screen is open. It reads exposure and colour settings. No photo or video is saved or sent.
The iPhone motion sensor notices movement such as picking up your phone. With your permission, Apple Watch records wrist movement overnight and sends a summary to your iPhone in the morning.
The back camera can scan a pairing code if you choose to pair with another iPhone.
Apple Health
Gildnight reads only the categories you allow. These can include sleep stages, heart rate, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, breathing rate, blood oxygen, wrist temperature, breathing disturbances, steps, active energy, exercise, time in daylight, mindful minutes, workouts, caffeine and alcohol.
These readings help show your nights, plan bedtime and find patterns. During the wake window, the Watch app can use heart rate and wrist movement to look for a lighter moment to wake you.
If you allow Save nights to Apple Health, Gildnight writes time in bed and time asleep for nights recorded without Apple Watch sleep. It does not write estimated sleep stages. You can turn this off in Settings, under Connections.
Gildnight does not sell your Apple Health data or use it for advertising. Apple Health has its own sharing and device settings.
Optional connections
Approximate location is used on your iPhone for local sun times and the sky. A rounded location is saved on your iPhone and excluded from backups. Location is not followed continuously or in the background. Turn off location permission to delete the saved location.
If you choose two-phone partner mode, the paired iPhones exchange your chosen display names and an encrypted sound timeline directly. The timeline includes sound times, types and levels, plus short summary blocks of snoring and talking. No audio, clips, transcripts or Apple Health readings are exchanged. Gildnight’s developer does not receive the exchange. You can remove the pairing.
Settings, summaries and purchases
Your schedule, goals, check-ins, ratings and settings are saved on your iPhone. If you add a name or date of birth to a PDF report, those details are kept on your iPhone for the next report.
Morning summaries and Ask your sleep run on your iPhone. Gildnight does not send the summaries to an outside service.
Alarms, reminders and weekly notifications are scheduled on your devices. Purchases, restoration and trial-time checks contact the App Store without sending your sleep, audio, Apple Health readings or location. Gildnight receives purchase information needed to unlock Plus; it does not receive your payment card details.
What you choose to send
Exported files, backup files and PDF reports are created on your iPhone. They leave it only when you save or share them. Those files can contain personal sleep information. Protect them wherever you save them. Sound clips are not included in backup files.
If you share analytics with app developers in your iPhone settings, Apple may provide crash reports. Gildnight does not add your nights, sound clips or Apple Health readings to those reports.
When you contact support from the app, the draft includes app and device details. You can choose to attach diagnostics with recent event times and app actions. They exclude sound clips, scores and Apple Health readings. Nothing is sent unless you send the email. Please do not attach nights or clips unless needed.
Keeping, deleting and moving your data
Your nights remain until you delete them. You can delete individual clips from a report or Saved clips. Settings, under Your data, offers free backup, export and deletion controls.
Delete all data removes saved nights, scores, clips and medals, along with Gildnight diagnostics and associated local data. It also requests removal of nights Gildnight wrote to Apple Health. If Apple Health cannot finish a deletion, Gildnight keeps the request and shows a notice. Reopen after allowing access, or remove the data in Apple Health. Your settings stay.
Deleting the app removes its local data. Nights previously written to Apple Health remain there until you delete them in Apple Health. Exports and clips you have already saved elsewhere are yours to delete separately.
To move to a new iPhone, make a backup file and restore it on the new phone. Sound clips are not in that file: share any clips you want to keep separately. You can withdraw permissions in your iPhone settings.

Questions or a privacy request
Gildnight is made by Dale Petersen, an independent developer in Australia. It is not aimed at children.
For access, correction, deletion or a privacy concern about information you have sent us, write to [email protected]. Sleep records kept only on your iPhone must be managed through the app because the developer cannot access them.
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new date.
